Products made of Corten steel can be used outdoors for years without additional coating – they are weather-resistant and maintenance-free. The special material properties result in a long service life without any special care. Maintenance work or costs are therefore not usually to be expected: an environmentally friendly and visually appealing choice for your garden. What is Corten steel?
The name of the material ‘Corten’ is derived from its special properties: ‘COR’ stands for ‘corrosion resistance’ and “TEN” for ‘tensile strength’. The material is therefore particularly weather-resistant, requires no coating whatsoever, and yet does not rust through. This is due to the composition of the structural steel: copper, chromium, nickel, silicon and phosphorus are added to it. Under the influence of weathering, a solid rust patina forms on the surface of the material with a kind of barrier layer of phosphates and sulphates that protects the steel from corrosion.
What advantages does Corten steel offer compared to wood, plastic or stone?
Corten steel is particularly weather-resistant, requires virtually no maintenance – and yet remains dimensionally stable and attractive for years to come. It is environmentally friendly and can be easily recycled. Corten privacy screen elements are also relatively easy to install. In comparison, wood suffers greatly from weather conditions and must be maintained and cared for annually. Plastic elements often appear cold and are not the best choice, especially when it comes to their ecological footprint. Building a privacy fence out of stone, on the other hand, is relatively costly, and stone can develop stains and cracks over time that require professional repair.
Which designs and motifs are popular for Corten steel privacy screens?
Corten steel privacy screens are available in numerous variants and designs. Many customers prefer opaque panels at the property boundary, either without any patterns or with partial patterns, and more open designs in the garden. What is the best way to maintain a Corten steel privacy screen?
Corten steel can stain when exposed to high levels of moisture. We therefore recommend sealing your Corten privacy screen with a colourless varnish. No special care is required. However, Corten steel can be cleaned occasionally with water to remove pollen or bird droppings, for example.
Corten steel fence: What costs can I expect?
The cost of a Corten steel fence depends on various factors. Corten steel is a very high-quality material that is weatherproof and extremely durable. Therefore, the purchase price is usually slightly higher than for a wooden or aluminium fence, for example. On the other hand, there are no costs for maintenance or timely replacement of the fence. The price of a Corten steel fence is around £300 to £450 per square metre, plus any costs for posts and installation.
How long does it take for Corten steel to rust after installation?
The formation of the distinctive rust patina on Corten steel depends on the individual weather conditions at your home: the higher the humidity and the more frequently the weather changes between wet and dry, the faster the desired rust patina with its unique colouring will form.
